Summary
Writing in 1932 for an audience of secondary school English teachers, Mary Austin lamented the harm that the modern search for the “great American novel” – a quixotic yearning that first emerged shortly after the Civil War – had inflicted upon late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American literature. “Probably the American reading public has never understood,” Austin wrote, “that its insistence on literature shallow enough to be common to all regions, so that no special knowledge of other environments than one’s own is necessary to appreciation of it, has pulled down the whole level of American fiction.”1 Rather than “competently knowing” many different Americas through the “many subtle and significant characterizations” provided by regional literature, Austin argued, readers have lazily sought only a “broad, thin, generalized surface reflection of the American community and American character” (98, 99). Now that attention was finally turning back to regional writing, it was “rather surprising,” noted Austin, “to find critics in the United States speaking of regionalism as something new and unprecedented” when “strongly marked regional fiction” had flourished since at least the middle of the nineteenth century (98, 99). The task of the modern English teacher, she suggested, was thus to show young readers how to identify and appreciate “the best regional literature of our past” so that they may recognize “emerging instance[s]” of the genre in the present (107).

This study explores the potential of routine preharvest cross-hedging of rough rice using wheat futures contract prices. A numerical simulation approach combined with risk efficiency analysis evaluates a wide range of cross-hedging alternatives. Results establish that farm-level cross-hedging can be considered a viable marketing alternative.

Excited delirium syndrome (ExDS) is defined by marked agitation and confusion with sympathomimetic surge and incessant physical struggle, despite futility, which may lead to profound pathophysiologic changes and sudden death. Severe metabolic derangements, including lactic acidosis, rhabdomyolysis, and hyperthermia, occur. The pathophysiology of excited delirium is a subject of ongoing basic science and clinical research. Positive associations with ExDS include male gender, mental health disorders, and substance abuse (especially sympathomimetics).
Excited delirium syndrome patients often exhibit violent, psychotic behavior and have “superhuman” strength which can result in the patient fighting with police and first responders. Continued struggle can cause a patient with ExDS to experience elevated temperature (T) and acidosis which causes enzymes to fail, leading to sudden death from cardiovascular collapse and multi-system organ failure. Therefore, effective early sedation is optimal to stop this fulminant process.
Treatment of ExDS must be focused on rapidly, safely, and effectively sedating the patient and providing intensive, supportive care. Benzodiazepines, like midazolam, may not be ideal to sedate ExDS patients since their onset takes several minutes, and their side effects include loss of airway control and respiratory depression. Injectable antipsychotic medications have a relatively slow onset and may cause prolongation of the QTc interval. Ketamine is the ideal medication to sedate patients with ExDS. Ketamine has a rapid, predictable onset within three to four minutes when given by intramuscular (IM) injection. It does not adversely affect airway control, breathing, heart rate, or blood pressure (BP).
In this retrospective case series, prehospital scenarios in which ExDS patients received ketamine by paramedics for sedation, and their subsequent treatment in the emergency department (ED) and hospital, are described. It is demonstrated that ketamine administered by paramedics in the prehospital setting of a community hospital based Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system is a safe and effective treatment for ExDS.

In 1910, at the outset of a turbulent American decade, Annie P. Hillis reviewed the liberating social advances being made by women during the Progressive Era. Writing in the Outlook, Hillis declared that the days of “idyllic, helpless femininity” were passing. As evidence she adduced the “six-foot captain of the basket-ball team” — who “laughs outright at the slender youth who would protect her” — and the “business woman,” who “can earn her own support and would be beholden to no one.” In both adult work and children's play, she claimed, American women were achieving “independence and equality with the other sex.” But in practically her next breath Hillis makes clear that women's liberation might have reached - or perhaps surpassed - its natural limits. Protesting that it is “too soon to predict the future” even as she reaffirms progressivism's fundamental ideology (“We are in a world where there is a definite purpose running through all events, where there is a definite march forward”), Hillis retreats to a distinctly unliberating position: it is for contemporary women, she insists, to “find their place and fall in line.”
